Commuting options
The Rutgers Academic Building is 10 minutes walking distance from the New Brunswick train station, which is serviced by NJ Transit and Amtrak. If you are using Amtrak, which directly connects to Boston, New Haven, NYC and Philadelphia, it may be easier to find a train that stops at Metropark, NJ. At the Metropark station, you can transfer to a local NJ Transit train that stops at New Brunswick. There is also frequent bus connection between New Brunswick to New York City. If you’re driving, then you should take I-95 and take exit 9 towards Route 18 and New Brunswick.
The conference venue is a 5 minute walk from the New Brunswick Train Station. There are NJ Transit Northeast Corridor trains that connect New Brunswick to Penn Station, 34th Street, New York City (45-65mins) and Newark Airport (25-45mins) in the north, and Princeton (15-20mins) in the south.
The train schedules can be seen at the NJ Transit portal.
The real-time train departures for the stations can be seen for New Brunswick, New York Penn Station, Newark Airport, and Princeton (the trains of interest would be on the Northeast Corridor line).
Nearby hotels
The New Brunswick area has offers some options for accommodation that would be easily accessible from the conference venue.

The Rutgers University Inn is towards the edge of the town, in a pristine neighborhood nestled across one of the Rutgers campuses. It is well connected to the conference venue via the highway Route 18. Additionally there is a free-to-use Rutgers bus system that can be used to commute around the different campuses.
The Hilton East Brunswick is a short 10 minute drive away. Conference attendees are encouraged to explore these and more options in the immediate area, and exploit of the connectivity New Brunswick provides to New York City and Princeton as well.
Staying Closer to NYC
Another lodging alternative for MRS participants is to stay closer to Manhattan so as to have the opportunity to visit New York City. In this case booking a hotel in the City may be convenient. It will typically, however, be more expensive than booking a hotel in New Jersey. Below are some alternatives to consider.
Manhattan: If participants prefer to stay in NYC, then the NYC Penn Station area is a good option. There are hotels close to 6th avenue, which are 1 avenue walk to New York Penn Station. Navigating the sometimes confusing New York Penn Station can add some time to the commute. Hotels in the area may be rather loud due to the 24-hour activity in the area but it allows great access to the entire NYC and the tri-state area in general.
From New York Penn you can take a train directly to the New Brunswick station, which will be 5-10 minutes walking from the conference venue. Below are the relevant train schedules for Aug. 22/23 according to the New Jersey Transit website :
Departing NYC Penn at 7:35am/7:53pm/8:05am/8:12am/8:28am
Arriving 8:29am/8:48am/9:00am/9:11am/9:26am at New Brunswick
Similarly, for the evening:
Departing New Brunswick station at 6:29pm/6:55pm/7:07pm/7:36pm/8:24pm/9:07pm
Arriving 7:29pm/7:43pm/8:09pm/8:45pm/9:28pm/10:12pm at NYC Penn
Jersey City: If participants want to stay in NJ but be close to the City, then there are many nice areas across the City (with wonderful views of Manhattan) where it will be possible to be within 10 minutes to the City by using the PATH train. The PATH costs as much as the subway (about $2.75 per trip) but it is a separate ticket. The Exchange place area in Jersey City (and the Jersey City area in general) provides access to various hotels and easy access to the City.
The connection, however, from these areas to New Brunswick is not as optimal. You would need to get 2 trains, the PATH to Newark Penn in New Jersey and then the New Jersey Transit train to New Brunswick. Budget somewhere between 1hr 15minutes to 1hr 30minutes depending on the time of your departure. This is not much longer than choosing to go from the NYC Penn Station but it is less convenient as you will have to switch trains.
Newark: The location that is somewhere in between NYC and the conference venue is Newark, NJ, which is also the most affordable. Thus, another alternative is to stay right next to the Newark Penn station during the conference, where you would be 35-40 minutes away from the New Brunswick station. It takes about 20 minutes from Newark Penn to get to New York Penn with NJ Transit or about 25 minutes to the World Trade Center with the PATH train. Newark has the reputation of being an under-privileged area.
If you choose to commute between your hotel and the conference venue, make sure you exercise caution while deciding on your hotel, commuting during your trip, and prioritize your safety. Feel free to reach out to the conference organizers at mrs_2019@email.rutgers.edu for any questions.
